Here is a good resource I came across that explains how to go about
assigning the appropriate permissions using selinux. I still haven't jumped
into selinux myself although I do run multiple fc3 mysql boxes.

I think it's a SELinux issue - (because it worked properly when I ran
SELinx in 'Permissive' mode). It's not seeing the file because the
'rights'/access to it has changed (when I did the yum update) -
therefore the MySQLd binary is not 'allowed' to see the file (because
only root can see it, my user mysql)...the question now is, "How to
change/allow SELinux attributes"....the reading begins - was hoping to
see if someone else was/is a SELinux guru
