[NTLUG:Discuss] Creative Dxr3 DVD decoder card

I'm not sure I understand the purpose of this decoder card.

I picked up some surplus hardware last week and one of the machines (a dual P3) had this decoder card along with an Elsa Synergy II AGP video card.  I was already considering replacing the video card and if I do, I'm now wondering what the virtue of keeping the decoder card would be.

I thought these cards were used in machines to offload some of the DVD decoding work from the older CPU and graphics card.  Am I way off base on this?
