Ok, I can still successfully edit forms from irs.gov with adobe acrobat reader 
5.0.9  (and Print in mandrake 10.1).. however, the file cannot be saved as an 
open (changeable) pdf.  To save my values I have to print to a .ps file. 
(which means the form cannot easily be changed later, but really i'm just 
wanting to archive it, not have it modifiable later.)  

Acrobat reader is copyrighted (and therefore absent from many nonpay distro's) 
but can be freely downloaded from adobe as a binary.
