Ralph:
Generally I agree with you, but re: XP --
OS or not, it is a fact of life for a helluva lot more people
than those running open source. I wish for, but will never
see, the day when the apps that I have to run in my business
work with Linux. Until that far-off time I am stuck with XP,
or some future M$ offering.
All of my Unix-inspired snootiness will not change that, only
the concerted effort by those coders out there who can make
codeweavers, wine or cedega really work. Only when the two
(linux and windows apps) can truly work togother will linux
appeal to the masses. Until then XP (or some other variant)
will rule and linux will be a sideshow. M$ ain't just going
to roll over and play dead while yappy-dog linux bites at
its heels. Neither will software houses produce decent apps
without a profit motive.

Unix since '87
Linux since RH5.2
Windows since 3.0
Apple since '80 (but not long after!)
CP/M, MP/M, DOS and even a little VMS
Still waiting for a decent system to come along.
