I use KDE but I'm sure the virtual desktop feature works the same. A
virtual desktop is not the same as virtual machines, which is the behavior
I think you are worried about. Having multiple desktops via the virtual
desktop feature simply means that you have a bigger-than-your-monitor
desktop and you see a portion of it at a time. The system resources,
including network connections, are utilized the exact same way as mult
windows on the same desktop do. 

Also, I doubt you are limited to 4 virtuals. It's configurable with KDE so
I doubt Gnome would impose a limit. I always have a bunch of windows
opened up. Even so, I've never had a need to go beyond 4 (or even 3).
