I've noticed with SA, and I read this as a general rule of thumb, you need
to update often. When a new spam filter version is released the spam
mongers start working on tricks to get around them. You may get 99% with
the new release but it starts losing its effectiveness immediately. My
current SA isn't even getting 60% anymore, but when I upgrade I expect to
be back to 98% or better.
As far as stopping traffic from getting to your server goes (the original
question as posted), sorry, but it's going to affect you. Somewhere in
the route the mail has to be evaluated, either by a firewall (ip
blocking), spam filter, mailserver, or MTA. The traffic will still be on
the network and if your ISP doesn't filter it for you it'll be on your
network somewhere.
