I misspoke earlier.  I usually tried DHCP, and the kernel crashed every
time, but I also did a static network configuration, and that crashed
too, as soon as I plugged in the cable.

How do you know the hardware is good?  I know my hardware _was_ good
before today, but I only run Linux kernels, so how can I tell if it's
_still_ good?

Yet the fact that you're having a similar problems suggests it's a Linux
problem after all, so my initial post wasn't off topic! :)

So then what's causing this problem?
