Howdy,
It sounds like you diagnosed it correctly. I have two systems where
the built in ethernet died. One Realtek nic died after a storm, so I
think I can blame myself for not unplugging it. The other was an Intel
and I have no clue why it died. Months later both systems run fine with
their new nics and no other symptoms. The Intel had no slots, so I had
to go to a USB nic. So, I would not necessarily worry. Now that I
think about it, it is a little strange that I don't ever remember losing
a PCI nic, just these 2 that were on the motherboard.
