I lost an onboard NIC once, but I know it was from a near lightening 
strike.  I don't use the computer much anymore because it's old & slow, 
however it's still useful for testing new stuff when I don't want to 
risk my main machine.  I put an old ISA NIC into it and turned off the 
onboard NIC in the BIOS and the machine still works.
