Dave,
  I installed from CDs because that is much quicker than doing it by
ftp.  Then, I go change my source to one of the ftp servers so I can get
all the extra programs they left off the CD.  I went and checked to see
if whois showed up and it does.  I did the search based on name, not
description as you tried.  I just installed it and there were no
problems.
  Check your sources and try again.  I suppose your ftp site could be
missing whois, but that seems unlikely.
