I've noticed that Tyan has started specifically advertising themselves 
as being Linux Friendly although I haven't personally used any of their 
boards recently.  Generally, any MB will do fine.

Personally, I like Seagate SATA drives at the moment but there will 
probably never be any kind of consensus on who makes the best hard drives.

Can't go wrong with Plextor.  They even have SATA DVD burners now 
although I'm not sure how well they work with Linux.
