I've had that problem with a number of laptops, plus some of them put 
the opening for the CPU fan on the bottom.  So if I have it on my lap or 
on the carpet, or otherplace with a soft surface, the fan hole is 
covered...ARGH!

Therefore, I sawed an 1/8" thick hardboard (sometimes called masonite) 
the size of my laptop [be sure to round the corners], and keep that in 
my bag.  Then when it's on my lap or other soft surface, I can use that 
to keep the fan hole on the bottom open; and it also keeps my lap cooler.

Makes you wonder if the design engineers actually try their prototypes 
out. :-)
