You're just not accustomed to the way threading works on gmail yet. 
It will not show you a separate message, it just shows up in the
thread when it comes back to your account,  and that's not immediate,
but shows up in the thread _after_ it comes back to you, and you may
have to click on the "refresh" link if you never close your browser.
It'll be in "Sent" from the beginning, and will also show  in the
original thread but not right away, it takes a bit for it to get sent
back to you. Just click on "expand all" [on this thread] if you want
to verify that it's there.
