[NTLUG:Discuss] Sound with FC3 and Intel 845GLLY Integrated Motherboard?

FC3 has some limitations that don't seem to be in FC2/FC1 (as I run
both); mainly due to the time in development I am assuming. I went to a
sound card myself vs running off the motherboard sound. Google yourself
a card and go for it. Easier than trying to find the drivers. Get a used
one... a ton of used parts shops off 75. Just make a few calls with the
list of working cards and I bet you can find one. They have bins galore
of parts. As long as your aren't going to be running the sound @ some
rave party you should be good to go.
Real Player is easy, just download the Linux software from real.com and
run the .bin from root in your terminal. I saved it to my /opt file
allow it to /usr universal which should get the Real links to
the /mozilla/plugin and /firefox/plugin (double check by looking
in /usr/lib/firefox 1.0.1 (whatever your install is)/plugin file. Look
for the nphelix.so and the nphelix.xpt. If they are not there pull up
the /usr/mozilla/plugin file with konqueror in root and drag and drop
them as links into the firefox plugin file. At that point you have the
plugin. Go to /opt/RealPlayer file and you should have the
player /realplayer.sh to drag to your desktop if you want.
This is a basic explanation as I do not know your skill level. If you
are Windows-centric the Konqueror browser is handy and familiar for
working with files and so on. Final basic note to run root Konqueror in
root, pull up a terminal and log in as root and run Konqueror. Again not
meaning to insult ANY user level, but from my experience as a recovering
Windows to Linux newby, sometimes the basics are needed... (still in the
recovery stages ha!)
I run Firefox. Not so much for any other reason than I like the
extensions. Firefox is the emerging Moz' to be honest. A weird state for
Netscape group; they have Netscape that is developed out of the Mozilla
open source group with its cutting edge browser Firefox... whatever, if
that is the choice use the Firefox. It doesn't hurt that it is a stick
in the side of IE either. Support seems to be good. I haven't tried
Galeon, but heck I am not married to anything in this Linux stuff. Its
all about the best anyway... may just try it and see how it feels.
Last note, Mozilla does have some items handy for windows users like a
mail client and calendar extensions. They are pretty good (for windows)!
But with all the mail clients in Linux available on the distro, why
bother with it. It is not really needed. So Slim it down and go with
Firefox.
