[NTLUG:Discuss] DualHead video setup using TV

Funny you should ask...

I just got this "sort-of" going this weekend. I used a nvidia-based FX-5500
video card, with the full desktop on my svga monitor and a partial desktop
on my TV, using the s-video out. I had to install the current nvidia driver
from their download site, and add some options and delete some modules from
the xorg.conf file.

I notice you are running an ATI card at present, but since you mentioned
nvidia I figured I would respond. If you are interested, I can get you a
copy of my xorg.conf and links to the information tomorrow. (They are at
the house.)

I say "sort-of" working, because I haven't figured out the best fonts to
use, and I used an unconventional svideo splitter to merge the s-video into
composite video (I didn't have a long enough s-video cable to reach...).
The image was legible, but the quality was just nominal.

YMMV.

Later,

Monty

Subject: [NTLUG:Discuss] DualHead video setup using TV

I sort of asked this question the other day, but I was fuzzy on
what I wanted. Now I know more of what I need....

Is there any video card ( hopefully a single video card ) setup
that works with Linux that lets you configure a dual headed
X-windows video setup where the 2nd monitor is a TV ( via
a s-video cable )?

I've set up dual headed systems in the past using a agp
and pci video card and hooking up 2 monitors. What I
want to do now is use my single ATI Radeon 9000 card
that has both a VGA and S-Video outputs and be able
to run applications ( games / videos ) on my monitor or
my TV.

It's farily trivial ( now ) to set up with windows, but I want
to do this on my linux box.

I think that the ATI drivers are 'proprietary' and hard to
get working with 'non supported' versions of linux. Would
I have better luck with nvidia cards/drivers?

Thanks - jack
