Question:
What happens if you connect up the dumb terminal to the Linux box?
If it works then odds are good that you need a null-modem between
the Linux box and the Onyx.

I wouldn't trust that.
Where RS-232 is concerned, it's *ALWAYS* a cable problem!

You might try turning off hardware flow control. If the remote system
isn't wiggling the right pins (or if one of the cables/adaptors along
the way isn't connecting it) - then disabling flow control may just
kick it into life.
