Where possible, I pipe (send) things to kprinter.  For example the
print command in Mozilla I have:
gs -q -sDEVICE=pswrite -sOutputFile=- -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -dMozConvertedToLevel2=true - | kprinter

Then from kprinter I can select the output device or PDF conversion, Fax, etc.

Not sure how you'd do this from gimp... mine is cups enabled by default.
