Rick,
For free, it is hard to beat Debian since you can download it
ABSOLUTELY FREE from www.debian.org. Even if you only have a dial up
connection, you can use jigdo (Jigsaw Download) to download it at night.
Start the download when you go to bed and stop it when you get up in the
morning (if it did not terminate it's self during the night) then start
it again the next night. It will take you about 1 week to get the Disk 1
image downloaded, but that is probably all you will need.
Also, Debian is, arguably, the most stable and bug free distribution
available.
