wget or kget are very nice alternatives.
Kget comes integrated with konqueror.
I always switch to konqueror when I anticipate downloading any sizable
file, unless I do it from CL, and in which case, I use wget,  so that
I can pick up where I left off  if for any reason it's interrupted.
Kget is really nice GUI download manager. There's pretty good review
of it in last month's issue of TUX Magazine, ( tuxmagagine.org ).
