If it's really that critical than you can invest in the talent and
know enough about the product to maintain it yourself if need be. This
is not entirely unheard of for even closed & proprietary apps.
It all depends on where your engineering philosphy is coming from
and how dedicated you are to the given business process.
Unless you are planning on gutting the application sometime soon, the
nearterm health of the company in question doesn't really mean that much.
Just look at Peoplesoft.
