[NTLUG:Discuss] Sendmail slow to respond

Hello:

This is strange.  Today, two different clients called me telling me 
that they are unable to send email from Outlook.  They keep getting 
a message that their connection timed out when connecting to the SMTP 
server.

I am at one of these clients' sites and when I do:
  telnet 192.168.1.1 25
it takes about 30 seconds to give me a response from sendmail.

I eventually get back:
  220 www.homexcorp.com ESMTP Sendmail 8.12.11/8.12.11; Thu, 12 May 2005
11:55:22 -0500
which looks like, but it takes a long time to get it.

I believe this is the source of the problem -- Outlook gives up when 
waiting for sendmail to respond.

Any ideas what could be happening?

I find it strange that two separate people called me with the exact
same symptoms on the same morning.
