And some ISPs consider it somewhere between impolite and theft of service to
use their name servers w/o being a customer.

It's one thing to end up at someone's NS via a recursive query for one of
their customers.  It's another to be doing wholesale use of someone's
servers without being a customer.

Besides, this is a Linux list.  So what you REALLY should do is to fire up a
caching nameserver on your Linux box (I personally like dnsmasq) and 

  (1) Learn more Linux
  (2) Be a good netizen
  (3) get much better performance

Depending on the network, some block external DNS requests and force you to
use their DNS servers.  Just a past experience.
