[NTLUG:Discuss] smartd?

At startup time, my FC3 tries to start smartd, the disk monitoring
daemon. The startup messages always report smartd failure, and naturally
there is a failure at shutdown too.

What is going on? Do I need smartd, and if so how do I find what causes
its failure to start? 

If I don't need it, I would like to remove it from startup.

My suspicion of course is my Serial ATA drives which FC3 classifies as
SCSIs.
