1) UID0 - you could change the name and the OS wouldn't care. Which is not
to say that various software doesn't have 'root' hardcoded in it.
2) FC1 is approximately RH10. Had RedHat kept RH, that's more or less what
would have been released as either 10 or 9.1 - nobody really knows for sure.
FC2, 3 and 4 represent quarterly updates to FedoraCore. So they're either
the .1, .2, etc or maybe the next .0 - there can be a lot of changes.
FC2 added SELinux but it was baulky. FC3 adds a usable version of SELinux.
You also have changes in the core graphic components X.org vs. XFree86, KDE
and Gnome releases, etc.
So FC4 is either RH10.2, 10.3 or maybe 11 - it's hard to say.
3) Sorry, one way or another the remote servers have to authenticate
themselves and that requires the password or other (domain) credentials,
just like a remote real Windows server. Grab a copy of "Samba 3 by
Example".

Subject: [NTLUG:Discuss] Three unrelated questions
Getting failures sending to the mailing list (just saw Chris' message) so
I'm going to try an "all or nothing" approach.
1) What makes the user 'root' special? Is it because the kernel treates UID
zero or the name 'root' differently? If not, what is it? I'm part "just
curious" and part wanting to know what would happened if I renamed root.
2) What are the significant differences between FC3 or FC4 and Red Hat 9? I
just did an FC3 install and, taking a quick look, didn't see much different.
What am I missing?
3) Anyone know of a way using Samba client on a Linux PC to get "network
mappings" to remote SMB servers without having to supply the password for
each one (no convenience) or store it in clear text in a local file (bad
security)?
