Howdy One,
  Were you at the monthly meeting in May?  That solution would be
adaptable to room temperature monitoring.  If you just want a single
room, I'd go with an iButton.  I have used them, although a little
differently than your application and been happy with the results.  It
is cheap and reliable.  You could easily make a web page to report the
last 20 observations or whatever.
