[NTLUG:Discuss] Video player / software format

I am interested in distributing video, and want it to play on Linux with 
minimum problems by users who have installed directly out of the box, on 
most of the distributions, and of course, need to also include Microsoft 
(but am sure that is the least of the problems).

What would be the recommendation for software type (avi....) and 
application that one would use, but would not have to install.
