My experience has been:

Auto + Auto
     Might work if both devices know how to talk correctly.

Auto + Hard coded
     You might have a link, but with errors. Can actually work sometimes.

Hard Code + Hard Code
     Works the majority of the time on the majority of devices and 
avoids any auto-negotiation problems.
