Yes, idSoftware released all Quake code (including Q3) under
the GPL. There are binaries for Linux.
idSoftware just released the Doom3 code under the GPL as
well, although the Doom3 binary for Linux has been around
since October.
EPIC MegaGames includes the Linux binary on the last CD of
Unreal Tournament 2004 (as they did for UT2003 too). The DVD
edition includes the 64-bit version for Linux. UT2004 for
Linux/x86-64 runs _faster_ than UT 2004 for XP 64-bit
edition, because of the Win32 on Win64 (WoW) layer used in
Win64 because most of Win32 is _not_ 64-bit clean (i.e., most
of XP 64-bit is still 32-bit).
Heck, even Linux/x86-64 runs WINE good, sometimes stuff that
won't run on XP 64-bit Edition (rare, but there have been a
few). Not that I advocate WINE, Windows is typically much
better. But XP 64-bit is so damn immature because Win32 is
not 64-bit clean at all.
There are also countless ports of Windows games for Linux,
especially if vendors release their engines GPL. My favorite
is the Freespace2 engine from Volution. If you like Space
Flight Simulators, then check out the Freespace/Freespace2
for installer Linux. FS/2 under Linux supports my
6-axis/10-button joystick just fine (pitch, yaw, roll,
throttle, look left-right-up-down), better than it did under
Windows. God I hated losing my $100 Thrustmaster Attack
throttle which was never supported under XP (even though it
worked fine under Linux -- something Thrustmaster said was
tied to DOS7/Win98, which is BS).
