[NTLUG:Discuss] Audigy 2 ZS Mic ALSA recording problem

I have read all kinds of posts and articles about getting the mic to
work using ALSA and the Audigy driver(emu10k1). The general consensus
is that whatever the fix is, you must use alsamixer in a terminal rather
than using gnome-volume-control utility.

I have played with slider control that there is in alsa mixer and
haven't yet been able to hear anything being picked up by my mic(which I
just verified works on my Ubuntu laptop using the Maestro2 driver). I
have selected ALSA in GNOME for both input and output. When running the
tests under the GNOME multimedia system selector tool, sometimes the
input test comes back with an error saying that it can't make a pipe or
something(I'm not at my computer now).

Furthermore, I noticed that on my laptop, the Maestro2 driver creates a
capture tab in the GNOME volume control tool whereas the emu10k1 doesn't.

Anyone have any thoughts or experience that would be helpful here?
