No - it's not my answer. It's just a part of the clarification
needed so I can ask the question coherently:
Given that this MP3 player shows files in the order they were
placed on the drive...which is a pain to deal with...
Is there a tool that would allow me to rearrange the
physical order of directory entries on the MP3 player's
drive?
Right now, the kludge is to completely erase the drive - then
copy the files onto it in the order I want them to play.
This is possible - but it's a pain. So a tool that would let
me rearrange the directory entries directly would be a big help.

Well, there are certainly name fields inside MP3 files - but the
player shows only the literal filenames.

Well, when there is just one album on there, there is just one .m3u
file - and it doesn't seem to affect the play order...so no.
