What do the logs say?  /var/log/messages or dmesg.  I've seen this  
happen a couple of times.  One time when a disk was going bad.   
Another when the kernel got a bit confused (bad driver?).  The fix  
for the former: got the data off and put in a new disk.  The latter  
was fixed by a simple reboot.
