wow - sounds just like a problem I'm having in FC3.  My box crashed (as it
does often - memory problem I think) a while ago and after that X wouldn't
start automatically.   startx , as me or root, works fine.   I can't
believe how much time I've spent trying to figure this out.  I use gnome,
but I found both gdm and kdm won't start X, but xdm will!  I've checked
permissions, cleared tmp, shutdown gracefully and rebooted dozens of times.
There is no indication in any log that there is an error.

Really quite irritating.
