Most reported security breaches are from the stored information at the
destination, not while in-transit.

Also, especially for smaller stores, even https:// isn't necessarily secure
- I've seen places where the information is forwarded via regular
unencrypted email to the merchant from a 'secure' payment site (they used
the printed email as my shipping document).
