First of all, a quick update about the Open Source Technology (OST)
program at North Lake: I'm working on the "Principles of Open Source"
course material at the moment. The course will be offered MW evenings
at North Lake this spring, both on line and on campus in a
time-shifted format. Drop me an e-mail if interested, or visit the
OST at NLC blog at http://durango.dcccd.edu/ost.
I'm also working to bring at least one open source seminar or
conference to North Lake this spring. It will probably be a legal
seminar covering the pros, cons, and pitfalls of mixed licensing
environments. I'd also like to see if I can get a speaker to talk
about the upcoming GPL comment period for the GPL 3 license revision.
I listened to Eben Moglen speak at length on this topic a few weeks
ago in Boston, and while I can't imagine we'd ever be able to afford
his speaking fees to bring him in, I hope that we can find another
legal mind to shed some light on the process.
OK, here's where I need your collective wisdom: I have a one-time
opportunity to equip our open source lab. While funds aren't
unlimited, they are sufficient to cover just about whatever a
well-equipped open source lab should have. I've posted a tentative
lab layout at the OST wiki (http://durango.dcccd.edu/wiki). If you
have a moment, I'd appreciate your comments and suggestions.
Your assistance will not only help our program, but will elevate the
visibility of open source technology throughout the Metroplex. We're
already getting national attention, and it's my hope that the
Metroplex becomes known nationally for its concentration of open
source experts.
