I use growisofs.  It writes to the DVD more or less directly, unlike 
cdrecord. It does mkisofs internall and on the fly..

I have a Pentium II, 333MHz machine with a Toshiba 8x DVD+/-RW drive and 
consistently burn at 4x+ DVD speed. This is to let everyone know that 
even when the DVD box says you have to have a 600MHz Pentium III 
minimum, don't believe it. That speed minimum is based on Microsoft OS 
and not a faster, leaner one. ;D
