[NTLUG:Discuss] Where do USB devices appear these days?

I have used my Uno card reader, (that I got for my Olympus camera a
couple years ago), on a Fedora Core4 system and it poped up on the
screen, worked fine, was realy impressed.
But, I've not stepped up to udev and all that on my main computer here
- still using 2.4 kernel on 2 desktop boxes here and I rather like
the way it works on the 2.4 kernels - although nothing get's
auto-mounted, that's just fine with me, would rather mount and umount
it myself most of the time anyway, but I do use an icon on the desktop
and can click my way in and out of the device if I so desire, (on my
RH-legacy and slackware systems). But again, I am impressed with
Core4's ability to auto-mount the USB devices, and the process seemed
to work flawlessly, at least on this one Core4 system.
Oh, yea, I've also used 2 different thumb drives on the Core4 system
too, and it worked equally well.
Not trying to put any one or anything else down, but, I really think
Fedora is doing lots of stuff right - just wanted to point that out.
(Core1 had a few issues it first, most were cured after various
updates, core2 was pretty good, (after updates), dono about core3, but
Core4 is awesome, IMO.)
