I just happen to have been fighting this myself lately.  I have the
official 2.6.15.1 kernel on variously RH8, RH9->FC3, fresh FC3.   It seems
to make a difference in how hotplug or udev handles hotplug devices.  I'm
having all sorts of grief getting these boxes to recognize my new uber-cool
Blackdog (http://www.projectblackdog.com) linux server.   Most of the
dogpound group seems to have it working, but so far I have only had
sporadic success on the RH8 workstation and never on my WinXP desktop.

I have full debugging turned on and numerous traces and tails and tests
running when I connect the Blackdog, and most of the time I get Zilch.
Nothing happens at all.  The clever little dog acts like different usb
devices as it starts up and I guess confuses the attached servers...

Nevertheless, when it does connect, it is extremely cool - I recommend!
It's early beta and actively being developed.
