hhmmmm...... I did a selective install of just 'date'  rather than fight 
issues relating to making sure that the utilities were put in the 
correct locations (meaning getting the latest Slack.build from the 
current slackware source directory and verifying that the package 
upgrade went smoothly.

I now have a working 'date' and can convert the script to better check 
for invalid dates. :)  Thanks so much Chris and everybody.  Kudos to you 
all!
