Call off the hounds. I finally found my problem. @#!%& 
Semms as how recently I had "replied to all" and kmail put
all of those addresses in kmailrc and when I clicked on the
"..." at the right of any address fields to bring up the 
addressbook popup, all of those addresses caused the popup
window to extend down below the bottom of the desktop,
somewhere halfway to China. Thing is, they weren't visible
in the popup window. I flushed them out of kmailrc and all
is working right again. Simple fix, hard to find.
