I think the problem was only (only!) a missing/corrupted ext3 journal
file. I had fsck delete the journal file, thereby turning it into an
ext2 filesystem. Then fsck checked the filesytem as an ext2 filesystem.
There were lots of errors, and we'll see if any problems show up.
Anyway, I converted it back to an ext3 filesystem, and so far every file
I've checked has been ok.
