Flywheel or motor/generator sets used to be common in the mainframe world -
they used to use weird power (415Hz IIRC), so the way to convert line power
was a motor/generator set.
The mechanical aspects afforded some (small) protection against power
problems (one to two cycle drops).
They are not cheap. Google for 'motor generator set'.

Another curious, wild thought came to mind. Anyone know how expensive it
would be to have an electric motor coupled to a generator via a relatively
large/dense cylinder such that the computer was totally isolated from the
external electrical environment?
