[NTLUG:Discuss] mail configuration question

I have a Mandrake 9.1 box that among other things sends me email message 
using "mail" (cat messageFile | mail -s "subject" myaddress).  This has 
all worked just find until some recent changes in the corporate mail 
system - they farmed it out, actually and now the mail from this server 
arrives anywhere from one to four days late.

The solution they say is to make sure my mail is sent to a specific smtp 
server - can anyone offer any guidance on that, please?
