Okay, so have you configured the UI level?  There's a setting for that.  
"Master of the Known Universe" is setting you want to see.

Sounds like you don't have your codecs installed in the places it expects 
to find them maybe.  I've run into that before.  I run FC5 and there are 
numerous install guides that take the user, step-by-step installing things 
like xine, mplayer and the collection of codecs offered by mplayer which 
are also used by xine.

If you're running a different distro, perhaps there's a guide similar?
