I've been reading up on X (the articles Chris referred to and the man 
pages) and discovered that xset could change the system bell 
characteristics.  This was good news because the defaults chosen for my 
system were very irritating.  Now the question is "Where do I put xset 
in the startup scripts?"  BTW, I am using kdm as my display manager and 
kde as my "X application package".  Thanks.
