This solution is a little OT, but check the latest 2600 magazine. It has
an article on replacing the firmware on a voip adapter for AT&T (I think
its a Belkin, don't have the mag in front of me right now) to unlock it,
and convert it to use sip. That will be cheaper than building PC
versions with asterisk etc, and probably easier. You should be able to
point them at each other and set the router up to use some dyndns
service. A little bit of learning there, but probably easier than doing
it with asterisk etc.
