What kind of laptop are you using?  Clearly your laptop sees the hardware 
as a different type of device than my Inspiron 8600 does.  That could prove 
crucial in making it work.  Also, did you get the modprobe thing to load 
any modules specific to the device manually?  The web site I indicated 
before shows how to do that.
