Sub-space communicators, most likely. 

As you go down in freq (longer wavelengths) the need for line-of-sight
diminishes, but so does the bandwidth. So, practically, yes you need LOS
for broadband access. Why worry with the 2.4GHz wireless stuff? Just bite
the bullet, sign up with Dish and be done with it. If and when the local
phone company builds out their DSL capability to your house you can pitch
the dish.
