I know this is a silly and likely incorrect answer, but are you really 
sure there's only one NIC?  Perhaps there's an onboard NIC on the 
motherboard that you weren't aware of (and that Knoppix is smart 
enough to detect where previous distros weren't)?

Maybe check the BIOS setup?
