600W is MORE than enough for that. I'm guessing it's a cheap
PSU (just being honest).
(too many case fans... they most be small... got any pictures?)
My old behemoth with 8x10K 73.4G drives, 1x32G drive,
2xDVD-RW,1x120G tape drive, dual Athlons, ran on
a 450W PSU (I did upgrade to a 510W). It was cooled
by 3x120mm fans.
My existing 4way box (2xOpteron 275) with 4G, 1x300G SATA,
1 DVDRW, 7600GT uses a 300W PSU.
I think a lot of boxes just aren't designed very well.
And the PSU thing... well... it's been a problem for
quite some time.
If you look at leviathan (the Opty box), I could power
3 of them off a 900W PSU (a 12-way config).
My guess is what you may have one weak rail(bad term)
on the PSU... or it's just being flakey.
