I have recently used a product called R-Studio to recover both Linux and MS
Windows data from crashed disks. The product is fairly straight forward to
use for the technically inclined. You can download a trial version (doesn't
recover any file larger than 64kb, but shows you that it would with a
license). I believe I paid about $80 for the lifetime license. See
http://www.r-tt.com/
Assumes you can mount the crashed disk in a system that boots up and has
enough space on a "different" disk to recover data to. You can then burn the
recovered data to CDs/DVDs assuming the volume.
Hope this helps,
Jim

Subject: [NTLUG:Discuss] Disk drive recovery
A good friend of mine had a Maxtor drive crash, and is looking
for a data recovery shop. I haven't used a data recovery shop
in over ten years -- so does anyone have any suggestions or
recent experiences to share?
Thanks in advance,
Pm
